Self-Leadership & Personal Leadership

“From Self-Leadership to Personal Leadership”

Performance is often measured mainly in the field of knowledge and skills (Intelligence Quotient – IQ). Many people perform particularly well in the field of knowledge and skills. What is missing is knowledge of the emotional aspects (Emotional Quotient – EQ) and the energy (Physical Quotient – PhQ). Even if there is a reasonable balance between the three axes, the drive to take action is often still missing. This is determined by the 4th axis; the sense (Sense Quotient – SQ). This course therefore goes into the basis of the four axes IQ-EQ-PhQ-SQ.

Know yourself, in emotional, mental, and physical fields and know what drives you. Only when that is well realized, it becomes possible to look at others and influence them (whether this is coaching, managing or everyone else in 1 in 1 contact).  Are you aware of your own motivations, your own drivers, your own strengths and weaknesses, your own character, the way you communicate, and of the way you come across?

Conversely, understanding the three axes also offers understanding for others and increasing your own empathy.  It is of utmost importance to have insight into yourself to recognize your own pitfalls. As with the systemic approach, participants are asked to identify stakeholders who play and have played a role in their development. Participants are expected to use these insights to analyze mutual relationships and their influences. These insights are worked out in the module Self-Leadership & Personal Leadership.

One’s personal leadership behavior is central, with an important link to organisational objectives. The main topics are:

  • Vision of coaching as an instrument for result-oriented leadership
  • Coaching relationship/organisational goals and organisational culture
  • Coaching cycle for managers
  • Insight into physiological and emotional aspects of the work life balance
  • Insight into the drivers for personal behaviour
  • Character determination from the MBTI, DISC and Situational Leadership
  • Coaching skills in ‘everyday’ coaching situations (including listening, asking questions, giving feedback, being perceived, intervention styles)
  • Communication and communication styles
  • Development model based on mental processes
  • Styles of coaching and team processes
  • Attention for the dilemmas between the role as coach and the role as manager

Learning objectives / final goals

  • Knowledge and insight into the various visions on coaching and leadership
  • Knowledge and insight into the relationship between coaching and leadership and the organizational goals and organizational culture
  • To acquire practical skills for the role as leader and coach

Teaching methods

This module is offered to the student in the form of both lectures and supervised tutorials. The lectures are interactive and are supplemented with discussions based on cases and practical examples. Participants will receive knowledge of a number of common assessment methodologies in combination with practical applications in cases and exercises. This gives them better insight into themselves, and they learn to apply this knowledge in the assessment of others and the relationship with others. Concretely, one or more pieces of theory are treated each lesson after which discussion and further development follows. The main theme here is the contributions from the students' own elaborations. The teacher is present to support the students in their learning process. It is also important to mention that the students themselves have a great responsibility in their own learning process. This is encouraged by the structure of the lectures, namely by leaving plenty of room for theoretical cases, practical examples and discussions. The meetings in the supervised tutorials are also an essential part of the module.
